Medicare recipient stays away from Medicare Advantage (Part C) like a plague.

RickCampbellmadenobonesaboutit.HewaspoisedtoenrollinMedicaidAdvantagePartCuntilhelearnedthatthelowertonocostcameatapricethatcouldcosthimhislife..jpg

Rick Campbell made no bones about it. He was poised to enroll in Medicare Advantage (Part C) until he learned that the lower to no cost came at a price that could cost him his life.

Health insurance corporations are investing millions in selling Medicare Advantage (MA) to Americans of Medicare age. That is your dollar spent indirectly to promote health insurance that taxpayers pay for, while corporate executives and shareholders skim a large percentage of your tax dollars as profits. The advertising has been very successful as by next year, over 50% of Medicare-eligible Americans will succumb to the high-pressure sales tactics as they opt-in to a detrimental form of Medicare.

This article’s intent is not to scold those who succumbed to the MA salesforce from the various insurance companies. They’ve invested much to get you. It is hard to resist free health club membership, a few free lunches, and eye, teeth, and hearing coverage. Many poor or financially strapped Medicare recipients could not get all that coverage for free with traditional Medicare. Senator Bernie Sanders and other Progressives have been fighting to include dental, hearing, and vision coverage in traditional Medicare. Still, too many politicians, Republicans and Democrats alike are on the take and block the legislation.

Health insurance lobbyists pay off politicians to cripple traditional Medicare to give Medicare Advantage the facade of better coverage. It costs the taxpayers much more than it would if it was all managed by traditional Medicare instead of the privatized Medicare Advantage. Private insurance must pay marketing costs, duplicate database and administrative expenses, exorbitant executive salaries, and shareholder dividends. Traditional Medicare has none of those costs. It is mathematically impossible for MA to be more efficient or less expensive than Traditional Medicare. And those additional costs don’t even consider the outright fraud that plagues the private corporations that swindle taxpayers.

Recently, I wrote the article “ Get Medicare! No to Medicare Advantage. It’s perfume-covered doo-doo that’ll bankrupt or kill you,” which presents the case against Medicare Advantage. It includes experts who understand that it is a fraud on the American Taxpayer and, at times, the patients it claims to serve. Please read it. It is well worth it with two start interviews included.

Thom Hartmann, the host of the Thom Hartmann Show, wrote one of the definitive books on our healthcare system. The book, “The Hidden History of American Healthcare: Why Sickness Bankrupts You and Makes Others Insanely Rich” is a must-read.

I want to be very clear. The continued growth of Medicare Advantage will further destroy our healthcare system. If you think our privatized health insurance is expensive, exploitative, terrible, and inefficient, Medicare Advantage will worsen it. I leave the article “ ‘Straight Up Fraud’: Data Confirms Private Insurers Use Medicare Advantage to Steal Billions “ with you from Common Dreams.

Amost every major player in the industry has been accused of fraud by a whistleblower or the U.S. government. In addition, the vast majority are engaged in rampant upcoding or exaggerating patients’ illnesses in order to reap more money from taxpayers-something they do while refusing to provide necessary care for tens of thousands each year.

Please do your due diligence.

And then there's this option, if we ever wake up and adopt it.

PENNYFARTHING: New research finds watching Fox News during a pandemic really can be deadly

Tucker Carlson spreading lies about the COVID vaccine

Some day, when my head’s removed from cryogenic storage after science discovers a cure for gouging out your own eyes with an oyster fork at the sight of Donald Trump, I’ll tell my grand-clones about that time thousands of people died painful, undignified deaths from watching television.

“But Aldous Prime,” they’ll say. “The Chevy Chase Show barely lasted five weeks! How can this be?” And I’ll tell them all about Fox News and the benighted era when a dread disease scourged the land and Tucker Carlson did his best to ensure as many people as possible died from it.

After the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in early 2020, Donald Trump wasn’t the only one who decided to take lemons and make some weird, semi-viscous murder drink out of flop sweat, dingo farts, and, like, half a slice of lemon at the most. Carlson did his best to downplay the importance of getting vaccinated against the virus, and while he has a long way to go to catch his pal Vladimir Putin, new research shows that he likely ran up quite a butcher’s bill while stumping for the Grim Reaper (who, for the record, also thinks Tucker Carlson is an asshole).

In a recent Washington Post column, reporter Philip Bump attempted to quantify just how large an asshole Carlson is—and the answer appears to be “massive.” Bump started off by citing previous research that identified a clear correlation between being a Republican and foolishly dying of COVID. That’s hardly surprising. Republicans have been killing themselves to own the libs for decades—most notably by opposing health care initiatives that would greatly improve their lives and their prospects of reaching old age. So this was just another data point in a long-term trend.

But there’s now evidence to show that alone among the major TV networks, Fox News had an outsized effect in convincing Republicans to kill themselves even faster.

Bump started off by asking why Republicans have been less likely to get vaccinated against COVID-19, and he concluded that it’s not just because their hero Trump wanted to pretend the virus didn’t exist. The Washington Post:

In part, we can point to the interplay of partisanship itself. As president, Trump tried to play down the danger of the virus and, with an eye to reelection, cast efforts to contain the virus as power plays from an overbearing government. This certainly helped influence behaviors among Republicans on vaccination, masking and social distancing.

Bump then quoted from a study published last week that found a significant Fox News effect when it came to vaccine refusal.

“Our results show that Fox News is reducing COVID-19 vaccination uptake in the United States, with no evidence of the other major networks having any effect,” the study from researchers at ETH Zurich concluded. “[T]here is an association between areas with higher Fox News viewership and lower vaccinations,” noting that “media emphasis on minority viewpoints against scientific consensus is linked to vaccination hesitancy.”

And in case you’re wondering if the study’s authors controlled for other variables—like Trump supporters’ proclivity for rejecting science, common courtesy, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on how to safely purple-nurple fruit bats—yes, they did. (Being mammals, bats do, in fact, have nipples. Thanks, Google! And science! And the brave, inquisitive bat-milkers who started it all!)

“We can rule out that the effect is due to differences in partisanship, to local health policies, or to local COVID-19 infections or death rates,” wrote the the study’s authors. “The other two major television networks, CNN and MSNBC, have no effect.”

So almost certainly—judging by the unambiguous survival advantage imparted by the COVID vaccines—Fox News has been killing its viewers. Full stop.

Of course, the biggest vaccine defamer at the network is Tucker Carlson, whose show freely traffics in vaccine disinformation (aka bullshit). Bump noted that in May 2021, Carlson’s show was the second-most popular on cable news, and the most popular among viewers aged 25 to 54. And, hey, that was really bad news for people aged 25 to 54.

What was Carlson saying about the vaccine in May 2021? See for yourself. But it included his elevation of inaccurate numbers about purported deaths from coronavirus vaccines and touting the idea that natural immunity was as effective as vaccination — ignoring, of course, the risk posed by reaching natural immunity. Carlson played host to covid-vaccine opponent Alex Berenson more than once. (Berenson’s shaky grasp of the data had already earned him the apt title “the pandemic’s wrongest man.”)

So while it would be irresponsible to unequivocally state that Tucker Carlson killed at least some of his viewers, it’s nevertheless a pretty fair assumption. As Bump notes, the Department of Health and Human Services has reported that the COVID-19 vaccines likely saved 330,000 lives in 2021—just among those enrolled in Medicare. Imagine if fewer of them had watched Fox News. They might still be alive.

Then again, watching Tucker Carlson and dying of an excruciatingly painful, easily preventable disease are pretty much a horse apiece, aren’t they?

Herschel Walker broadens appeal to Georgia Republicans with new story about, uh, livestock sex

COMMERCE, GA - MARCH 26: Former Heisman Trophy winner and candidate for US Senate Herschel Walker (R-GA) speaks to supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump during a rally at the Banks County Dragway on March 26, 2022 in Commerce, Georgia. This event is a part of Trump's Save America Tour around the United States. (Photo by Megan Varner/Getty Images)

Please stop please stop please stop

Now that the one son Republican Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker had publicly acknowledged as his own has thrown up his hands and abandoned dad's campaign, that campaign has gone even further off the rails than it was before. And it was never on the rails to begin with. It was maybe adjacent to some rails, maybe? Like, if the campaign rails were over here, then Walker's campaign would be the empty parking lot of an abandoned mall next to the tracks, with weeds growing through the pavement, and Walker's campaign would be leaning precariously into a dumpster in that parking lot, looking for old cassette tapes or something. I don't know, I haven't put a lot of thought into this.

What we do know is that the man the Republican establishment chose as its very best option to represent the Republican Party in Georgia hasn't been doing so great after news came to light that he had paid for a then-girlfriend's abortion, and had kept it from his family, and lied about it when it came to light, and kept lying even as the woman in question was revealed to be the mother of one of the kids he casually forgot to mention he had until reporters discovered them on their own. How has he been responding to the newest revelations? Not well.

Herschel Walker just told a weird parable about a bull who was with six cows, and three of them were pregnant, and he saw some more cows on the other side of the fence so he hopped the fence and cut up his belly. I don't know either, man.

Yeah, that's indeed the short version. You might keep an eye on fellow Republicans Tom Cotton and The Ghost Of Rick Scott as Herschel weaves his little tale of ... something? Is Herschel talking about what we all think he’s talking about?

Herschel Walker just now: "I've been telling this little story about this bull out in the field with six cows, and three of them are pregnant... so you know he's got something going on"

This is why Republicans suck VERY VERY MUCH at writing children's books. Anytime a "family-values" abortion-paying-for secret-child-having repeatedly-held-gun-to-wife's-head Republican Senate candidate starts going on about livestock sex, things are going to go downhill quickly. There are very few campaign strategies that have, as bullet points, "and now you’re going to go out and tell the crowd a story about livestock sex." NO.

But the moral of this little story is ... what? Herschel imagines himself as the bull, right? And he got three women pregnant that we know of, and maybe there's three more we don't know about, but for Senate Republican candidates in Georgia the grass is always greener on the side of the fence with even more cows than that, so he's naturally going to go through barbed wire to look for them, and hey I think we are going to stop thinking about this right the hell now, because sweet and sour Jesus this is not the closing argument we want to be hearing from any would-be Republican senator past or present.

We do not want to hear about livestock sex from Tom Cotton, or from Mitch McConnell, or from anybody else. Not as a parable. Not as a free-form poem. Please stop talking about cow sex.

Walker did stop, but not before making everything even weirder than that.

See there, and you were beginning to wonder if he really was Senate material.

Moving on ...

Walker: I don’t think they know they woke up a bear. I’m not just a dog now, I’m a bear

Okay, so first he was a bull, then a dog, now he's a bear? Is the bear having sex too, or is that not specified? And he's both dog and bear now, some sort of freaky dog-bear hybrid? Can anyone explain the train of thought that gets us from there to "and that's why you should vote for me to be in the United States Senate, where I can write new tax laws or whatever?"

This is not how a campaign normally operates! This is not how parables operate! This is maybe how German folk tales usually go, but parables? Not really! Normally there are no candidates who climb up on stage to tell stories of sex-having mountain goats with a long history of head injuries, to give one inappropriate example out of many.

We're used to Republican politicians announcing that there are Too Many Trees These Days, from Ronald Reagan to Donald Whatshisname to this guy. We can get through that. We're used to Republican candidates who hide a history of just blood-curdling moral failures; hiding secret sex partners and the abortions you paid for is so commonplace it might as well be written into the Republican Party platform. You can be banned from local malls after becoming infamous as the town's most persistent sex pest, and we're even used to that.

Walker, though, seems intent on shooting the moon here. He's going to fill out every square of the Republican Scandal Bingo cards so that everyone wins a prize. He's running against a Democratic minister, no less, and one who has not yet become famous for telling stories about sex-having animals.

Stop it! Enough! This has all been very funny but for the love of God and biscuits, Walker campaign staff, get this man help instead of just going through the motions for a paycheck. Suggest he pursue alternate careers, maybe something in accounting. No petting zoos. No children's books. What about pumpkin farming, one of those guys that tries to grow the biggest pumpkin for Halloween, maybe he'd be interested in that? Some of them are even big enough to turn into boats; he could float around and pretend to be in the Navy.

A. J. PENNYFARTHING: GOP's new motto: “Yes, we know better—but fuck you anyway, America!”

no image description available
Remember when Ted Cruz was furious because Trump insulted his wife?  Well, Toady Ted has now thrown said wife under the bus.

New book: Cruz admitted all 100 senators knew Trump was guilty during first impeachment

Republicans love their phony bugaboos. Whether it’s graduate-level courses being taught in kindergarten, migrant caravans shoving old women out of the way at the A&P to score the last marble rye, or foreign drug cartels handing out fentanyl to trick-or-treaters for Squad-knows-what reason, the GOP is great at distracting you from the hell demons feasting on your viscera all day, every day, like so much Laffy Taffy.

But if there’s a suspected Russian agent in the White House doing things only a Russian agent would do—well, never mind. We’ll just see how it plays out. How about that, patriots?

In yet another tardy tell-all on the bag of moldering mystery dicks that was the Trump administration—this one titled Unchecked: The Untold Story Behind Congress’s Botched Impeachments of Donald Trump—POLITICO’s Rachael Bade and The Washington Post’s Karoun Demirjian detail the mental gymnastics congressional Republicans went through during Trump’s first impeachment, all in order to make him seem vaguely not-guilty. Yet according to no less an authority on evil than Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, every single Republican senator actually thought Trump was corrupt to the core. (Or to whatever passes as a Trump “core.” Truth is, all you’re likely to find in there is nougat. Or maybe an old, glitchy CPU from a Furby.)

If you think back to 2,137 hair-on-fire Donald Trump scandals ago, you’ll recall that Trump withheld vital military aid to Ukraine during a shooting war in order to blackmail its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, into announcing an investigation into Joe Biden—who, if you’ll recall from 1,311 hair-on-fire Trump scandals ago, forced Trump to either go on a feral crusade against our democracy or retreat inside his own neck wattle in abject shame. (As you may recall, Trump opted for the former.)

The question at the time was whether Trump had engaged in a quid pro quo to force favors from his Ukrainian counterpart. It was obvious he had, of course, but Republicans weren’t going to give up on their fantasies that easily. After all, they had a country to ruin, and very little time in which to ruin it.

According to Bade and Demirjian, Republicans were so unimpressed with Trump’s lawyers—who included legendary law professor and Jeff Epstein pal Alan Dershowitz, who’d argued that Trump could do anything he wanted if he thought it would get him elected—they felt the need, as putative “jurors,” to help out Trump’s defense team.

HuffPost:

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) told Trump’s team afterward to fire Dershowitz on the spot, while Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) warned them to switch tactics.

“Out of one hundred senators, you have zero who believe you that there was no quid pro quo. None. There’s not a single one,” Cruz reportedly said at one point, contradicting what Republicans were saying publicly about the charges at the time.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) also fumed at Trump’s legal team after they fumbled responding to a senator’s question about calling new witnesses. Trump’s attorneys said that it was simply too late to do so, a line Graham worried would lose Republican votes.

In fact, after that fumble, Graham reportedly opined, “We are FUCKED. We are FUCKED!” as he walked into the GOP cloakroom.

According to the book, even as Republican senators balked at publicly discussing the hearings, telling the media that they needed to remain neutral as “jurors,” Trump’s incompetent legal team forced them to act in private. So then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell twisted arms, ultimately convincing Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander to vote against hearing further witnesses. Particularly at issue was likely testimony from former National Security Adviser John Bolton, who’d claimed in a book of his own that Trump had told him his scheme to withhold military aid from Ukraine was definitely part of a quid pro quo.

So why the reluctance to convict a guy whom they all knew was guilty? Because Republicans weren’t quite done handing out goodies to wealthy donors, stealing Supreme Court seats, or generally terrorizing anyone with a working womb.

“This is not about this president. It’s not about anything he’s been accused of doing,” McConnell reportedly told his charges. “It has always been about Nov. 3, 2020. It’s about flipping the Senate.”

GOP Senate leaders weren’t just involved in fixing the vote, of course. They were also forced to coach the Trump team in the fine art of not looking like overt criminals.

The book recounts an episode in which McConnell’s top legal counsel, Andrew Ferguson, wrote out an answer to a question Republicans wanted to ask the Trump team during the trial. It was meant to establish a B.S. line of argument that Bolton’s testimony would be moot.

The group gathered around a laptop to weigh in as Ferguson typed. “Assuming for argument’s sake that John Bolton were to testify in the light most favorable to the allegations…isn’t it true that the allegations still would not rise to the level of an impeachable offense? They agreed to ask. “And that therefore…his testimony would add nothing to this case?”

But the senators were worried. Trump’s lawyers had already proven themselves unreliable, even when lobbed the easiest softball questions. “Is Trump’s team going to answer this the right way?” Graham asked.

“I will go down there and tell them to answer it the right way,” Ferguson vowed.

Way to go, “jury”! You saved this monster from himself! Good thing he didn’t go on to incite any insurrections or steal any top secret nuclear documents or anything. Crisis averted! The republic is saved!

When the history of this era is written, Cruz’s quote needs to be italicized, underlined and, ideally, tattooed on every congressional Republican’s forehead. Because it’s the only quote you need to understand the modern GOP.

In fact, their motto might as well be “Yes, we know better—but fuck you anyway, America!” It would be the first honest sentence we’ve heard out of them in years.
Remember when Cancun Cruz got caught heading for the beach as his fellow Texans froze?

Biden's Pot Pardon: Racism Was Baked in from the Beginning of Reefer Madness

The Racism Was Baked in from the Beginning of Reefer Madness

"Reefer Madness" (photo: Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

Dark side to the dank strictures.

Charles Pierce / Esquire

Not far from this very keyboard there is a marijuana store. It is the size of a Target, all white and glass, and from the street, it looks like a place where you’d go to buy modern kitchen appliances or high-end electronics.

Every time I walk by it—and yes, I walk by it—I think back to when weed was sold in baggies by the ounce, usually by someone you knew, however casually. I knew a guy long ago who had a client list to die for: business leaders, bankers, entertainers (obviously), and more than a few regular clients up at the state house on Beacon Hill (which is probably why he never got busted).

On Thursday, the president of the United States called a partial truce on this particular front in our misbegotten "war on drugs." He issued an executive order that pardoned every person in federal custody for possession of marijuana.

He did so in a way that showed that he recognizes the absurdity at the heart of the dark burlesque of having people in prison for possessing a substance that is now legal all over the country. The president said:

“No one should be in jail just for using or possessing marijuana. It’s legal in many states, and criminal records for marijuana possession have led to needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities. And that’s before you address the racial disparities around who suffers the consequences. While white and Black and brown people use marijuana at similar rates, Black and brown people are arrested, prosecuted, and convicted at disproportionate rates. Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs.”

Obviously, this was a high-stakes political move for the president. We are coming into the home stretch of a crucial midterm election, and the Republicans plainly have decided that a Nixon-era “law ’n order” campaign is their golden escalator to the stars.

They are hammering Democratic candidates with ferocious—and toweringly mendacious—TV ads on the hoary theme of “soft on crime.” One example is the U.S. Senate race in New Hampshire, where vulnerable Democratic incumbent Maggie Hassan has found it necessary to return fire with a commercial in which uniformed police talk about how tough she is on crime and border security. Her slightly cracked opponent, Dan Bolduc, is almost invisible in the air war. It’s Hassan against the national Republican Party.

(Perhaps the most hilariously dishonest attack along these lines is the faux outrage that federal prisoners got pandemic stimulus checks just like their un-incarcerated fellow citizens did. Dzokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bomber, stars in many of these commercials, even though his $1,400 instantly went to pay his criminal fines and to a restitution fund for his victims. Also, the bill that set up the program was passed in an enthusiastically bipartisan way.)

ALDOUS J. PENNYFARTHING: Pete Buttigieg hits back at Marjorie Taylor Greene over homophobic electric vehicle take

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has a problem with electric vehicles (EVs), apparently. Why? Because if God intended for us to drive EVs, He wouldn’t have filled the world with a rich, gooey nougat of fossil fuels that could only have been created through millions of years of heat and pressure being brought to bear on ancient organic matter—or by an ineffable, omniscient deity who loves pranking right-wing evangelicals into thinking the Earth is barely older than this tree.

So at Donald Trump’s latest Loser-Palooza rally in Michigan over the weekend, not only did Greene suggest that Democrats were already pushing conservatives into Soylent Green factories with impunity, she also claimed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is openly gay, is trying to “emasculate the way we drive” by promoting EVs.

Here she was, sounding as usual like a rutting yellow baboon who somehow got her head stuck in the narrow end of a vuvuzela.

GREENE: “What’s more American than the roar of a V8 engine under the hood of a Ford Mustang or Chevy Camaro—an incredible feel of all that horsepower? But Democrats like Pete Buttigieg want to emasculate the way we drive and force all of you to rely on electric vehicles, after they shut down your great Michigan auto industry.”

What’s more American than an obnoxiously loud, gas-guzzling sports car? Okay, I’ll play. How about a U.S. congresswoman who doesn’t try to overthrow our democracy? And while I know Greene is pretty callow, I think she’s been alive long enough to remember when a Democratic president literally saved the U.S. auto industry. Also, that same auto industry is pretty darn “woke” these days when it comes to EVs.

On Tuesday, Fox News host Neil Cavuto asked Buttigieg about Greene’s comments, and he was pretty gracious in light of Greene’s not-so-veiled attack on Buttigieg’s manhood.

CAVUTO: “Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Georgia Republican at a rally in Michigan, said this past weekend that ‘Mr. Buttigieg is trying to emasculate the way we drive’ by, she goes on to explain, by supporting environmentally friendly transportation. But what did you think of her wording?”

BUTTIGIEG: “I literally don’t even understand what that means. I mean, my sense of manhood is not connected to whether my vehicle is fueled by gasoline, or whether it’s fueled by electricity. This is a practical matter ...”

CAVUTO: “Were you offended by that, sir? Because even people who, you know, share her politics didn’t share that view.”

BUTTIGIEG: “It’s a strange thing to say. You know, to be honest, there are other members of Congress that I pay more attention to when I’m thinking about opinions that really matter or ideas that are going to be critical to engage with.”

While Republicans remain hopelessly mired in the past—whether it be refusing to accept the results of the 2020 election, fetishizing modes of transportation that murder the planet, or allowing Dr. Oz to appear on camera without a shock collar—everyone, and most especially auto industry executives, knows EVs are the wave of the future.

Eventually, most of us—including Marjorie Taylor Greene—will likely own an electric vehicle. If she wants to hear the roar of a V8 engine, she can always record it and stick the tape in her 8-track player whenever the mood arises.

Literally no one will give a shit, but at least she’ll be spewing less toxic exhaust into the atmosphere. From her car, that is. Can’t do much about the EPA superfund site atop her torso.

As Saudis Stab Biden in the Back With Oil Cut, Only Electric Vehicles Can Make US Independent

As Saudis Stab Biden in the Back With OPEC+ Oil Cut, Only Electric Vehicles Can Make US Independent

In a major blow to President Joe Biden, on Wednesday, OPEC+ took steps toward cutting the oil production of the members by 2 million barrels a day. Jackie Northam at NPR reports the views of analysts who believe that Saudi Arabia and Russia drove the decision in order to get prices back up over $100 a barrel. Oil prices have fallen consistently since last spring when the price touched $120 a barrel on the Brent Crude Exchange, to only $93 a barrel today. It had been as low as $88 a barrel in recent days, but news of the OPEC decision sent prices higher.

Saudi Arabia has ambitious plans to transition to a post-oil economy over the next two decades, and so wants to get as much for its petroleum as it can, while it is still worth something. Russia is facing further European boycotts and sanctions that will kick in at the end of the year, and so needs to make up with a high price what it will lose in volume if it is to remain capable of funding the Russian state and the expensive war on Ukraine.

In July, President Biden was convinced by his national security team and perhaps his Democratic Party pollsters to make a trip to Saudi Arabia, where he met with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, helping rehabilitate the disgraced royal whom the CIA had fingered in the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul four years ago. Biden had pledged to make Saudi Arabia a pariah over that and other issues, but was forced to eat crow when Russia invaded Ukraine last February. Russia is a major petroleum producer, and the sanctions Biden and his European allies placed on Russian oil drove down its production. The loss of some Russian production caused a spike in gasoline prices, which hurt Biden among US consumers. The subsequent fall of gasoline prices for the past several months has been good news for Democrats. Biden was asking Saudi Arabia to increase production, which would hurt Russia’s war effort and help the Democrats in the midterms.

Bin Salman pocketed the fist bump of recognition by Biden, but now has stabbed Joe in the back by pushing for a significant cut in production, which will drive prices up again. This helps Russia and hurts the Democrats. Maya Angelou said that when people show you who they are, you should believe them the first time. Bin Salman has done a lot of showing — launching the ruinous Yemen War, kidnapping the prime minister of Lebanon, shaking down his cousins among the princes with house arrest in the Ritz Carlton, and allegedly ordering the murder of Khashoggi. Because the Saudi hit team (which was from Bin Salman’s own security detail) brought along a medical examiner to cut Khashoggi’s body up into pieces that could be smuggled in garbage bags out of the consulate and secretly buried around Istanbul, and because the ME used a bone saw, Bin Salman is jokingly called Abu Minshar, Mr. Bonesaw, on the Arab street.

It was pretty predictable that Mr. Bonesaw would take Joe Biden for a ride. And he has.

This year the US is producing 11.8 million barrels a day of petroleum. Based on this summer’s numbers, the US is using 20.8 million barrels a day. There is a shortfall of several million barrels a day, which is met by imports– mainly from Canada and Mexico but also we import 500,000 or so barrels a day of petroleum from Saudi Arabia.

Not only that, but our European allies depend on Russian and Gulf petroleum, though the EU is trying to cut Russia off by the end of this year. Europe is not energy-independent, which has sometimes made its member states reluctant to sign on to US policy. That most European countries have yielded to President Biden’s entreaties and supported Ukraine against Russia has opened the bloc to Russian blackmail over petroleum and fossil gas supplies, and to Russian schemes to get Europe to pay for the war on Ukraine through those energy imports.

Both the United States and the European Union need a Declaration of Independence from Oil.

Biden knows very well the proper response to the OPEC cartel’s monopoly pricing of petroleum, and its collusion with Moscow in raising prices, which is to turbocharge the adoption by Americans of electric cars. The Inflation Reduction Act has generous subsidies for EVs assembled in the US. The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has billions to help states build a network of electric chargers for cars so that people are not afraid of running out of juice. I drive an EV. It doesn’t happen. So the anxiety is misplaced, but sure, it is great to have lots of fast charging options.

There is lots of good news on the EV front in America. In the second quarter of this year, EVs doubled to nearly 6% of new car sales nationally year on year.

Despite a decline in purchases of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, Ford tripled its sales of electric vehicles year over year in September, with the Mustang Mach-E continuing to rise in popularity. I’ve test-driven one. It is a very nice electric SUV.

The Chevy Bolt saw sales rise by 23.9% in the US in the third quarter. The Bolt is maybe the best value in EVs at the moment, with a basic starting price of only $26,000. As of January 1, you can also get a $7500 federal tax rebate on a Bolt, as well as on a Tesla. Demand for the Bolt is so strong that Chevy plans to increase production from 44,000 in 2022 to more than 70,000 next year.

We are on the ground floor of what Arezou Rezvani at NPR recognizes as a huge transformation, down to the kind of automobile engineers universities need to train.

One good thing about the OPEC+ production cut and consequent likely rise in gasoline prices? It will help even more consumers see the beauty of having an electric car. We just plug ours in at home. During the day (I don’t work 9-5), it is taking in electricity generated by our solar panels, which is free. The idea of running my car on clean, free sunlight is a trip. I look forward to the time, which is rapidly nearing, when everyone can afford to do the same, and can in fact save loads of money in doing so, not to mention saving the earth from a baleful climate emergency.

In a world growing more unlivable by the season, one obvious solution is to phase out fossil fuels faster - thereby also avoiding being blackmailed by Saudi Arabia and Russia.
