Melania, Natalie Harp and the strange triangle in Trump's White House

"An optics problem that could have been predicted by a five-year-old with a smartphone."

There are presidential marriages.

And then there is Donald and Melania Trump.

Their relationship has always operated according to a peculiar choreography: proximity without constant intimacy, public appearances without the conventional performance of marital unity, affection mixed with distance, and an extraordinary ability to make the absence of one spouse more interesting than the presence of most politicians.

Now the choreography has produced another episode.

Donald Trump went to Ireland.

Melania stayed home.

And Natalie Harp went with him.

That is the sort of coincidence that makes the Washington gossip industry reach for its oxygen tank.

The facts are straightforward. Melania Trump did not accompany her husband on his September visit to Ireland. Trump himself joked about the absence, saying she was “with him in spirit” and suggesting that she did not want to endure the seven-hour flight. He also joked about whether she was sufficiently sociable.

Then there was another conspicuous absence.

Melania also skipped the Republican Party's extraordinary midterm convention in Dallas the previous week. Her spokesman confirmed that she would instead attend a White House Historical Association event in Washington.

That is unusual.

But it is not unprecedented enough to prove a marital crisis.

Melania has never behaved like the stereotypical American political spouse. She has maintained a much lower public profile than many first ladies, including during major political events. In other words, her absence is newsworthy, but it is not evidence by itself of anything sinister.

Then comes Natalie Harp.

Harp is not some random blonde who wandered into Air Force One's orbit.

She is Donald Trump's executive assistant and one of the president's most trusted aides. She has become unusually visible around him, particularly in his communications operation, and her closeness to Trump has generated speculation for months.

Reuters recently reported that Trump gave Harp a $45,000 cash Christmas gift in 2025, alongside two other close aides, Margo Martin and Chamberlain Harris. The payments have already generated an ethics debate over whether federal employees can properly receive such personal compensation from the president. The White House says the gifts were personal and unrelated to official duties.

So yes, there is something objectively unusual here.

Harp is extraordinarily close to the president.

She is extraordinarily loyal to him.

She is unusually visible.

She has accompanied him on politically and personally significant trips.

And now she was in Ireland while the first lady was not.

But then comes the part where journalism and gossip part company.

There is no established evidence that Trump and Harp are having a sexual relationship.

None.

There are rumors.

There are stories about the unusual intensity of their professional relationship.

There are accounts describing Harp as deeply devoted to Trump.

There are reports about private access.

There are alleged letters.

There are endless photographs and videos.

There is an entire cottage industry dedicated to interpreting every glance between the president and his assistant.

But none of that establishes an affair.

Indeed, the most interesting development of the past few days is that Melania's own senior adviser, Marc Beckman, publicly pushed back against the speculation, describing Harp as hardworking and loyal and dismissing the rumors about her relationship with Trump.

That does not prove that everything is fine.

It proves something much simpler:

the White House knows the rumor exists.

And that matters because political optics are sometimes more powerful than facts.

Imagine the photograph.

The president travels overseas.

His wife stays home.

The president's young female executive assistant travels with him.

The White House then becomes irritated when journalists notice.

This is not evidence of adultery.

It is, however, an optics problem that could have been predicted by a five-year-old with a smartphone.

And Trump himself does not exactly make things easier.

Instead of providing a boring explanation, he jokes.

Melania does not want the seven-hour flight.

She is watching from home.

She is there “in spirit.”

Perhaps that is simply Trump being Trump.

Probably.

But political communication is not evaluated according to intentions alone. It is evaluated according to what people see.

And what people see is a president increasingly surrounded by a small circle of intensely loyal aides, one of whom happens to have become a persistent subject of speculation.

The story becomes even more interesting because Harp's relationship with Trump is not merely professional in the ordinary sense.

She has long been one of his most devoted defenders.

Her public profile rose after she credited Trump with helping her access experimental medical treatment under the Right to Try law. She subsequently became a Trump loyalist, worked in conservative media, joined his political operation and eventually became an executive assistant in the White House.

Michael Wolff and other journalists have described her as an unusually important gatekeeper around Trump. Reports have also described concerns among other aides about the degree of access she possesses. Those reports are about political proximity, not proof of a sexual affair.

And that distinction should remain intact.

Because the easiest thing in the world is to turn a powerful man's female aide into the “mistress” of the story.

It requires almost no evidence.

A photograph.

A smile.

A trip.

A rumor.

A blonde woman standing near a powerful man.

Suddenly the entire narrative writes itself.

But the real story may actually be more interesting.

What does it mean when a president develops an inner circle in which personal loyalty becomes almost as important as institutional hierarchy?

That is the question worth asking.

Harp's importance is not necessarily that she may or may not be sleeping with Trump.

It is that she appears to occupy an unusually intimate position in the president's political ecosystem.

And that has consequences regardless of what happens in the bedroom.

If an aide can influence what information reaches the president, what messages he sees, which stories he encounters, which people obtain access to him and how he responds to criticism, that person possesses political power.

No affair is necessary.

No scandal is necessary.

Power is enough.

And this is where Melania's absence becomes politically interesting without requiring us to invent a marital drama.

The first lady has built her own role.

It is deliberately limited.

She chooses when to appear.

She chooses when not to appear.

She does not seem particularly interested in playing the traditional political wife who stands beside her husband at every rally, every convention and every foreign trip.

That may be frustrating to the White House.

It may be perfectly acceptable to her.

It may even be part of the arrangement between the Trumps.

We simply do not know.

What we do know is that the visual contrast has become impossible to miss.

Melania disappears.

Natalie appears.

And the president jokes about it.

That is enough to generate headlines.

The internet will do the rest.

And the irony is that Melania's own representatives have now been forced to defend the very aide whose proximity to her husband is generating the speculation.

That is almost comically Trumpian.

The first lady is not traveling with the president.

The aide is.

The rumor machine starts.

The first lady's adviser responds.

And everybody insists that there is nothing to see.

Perhaps there really is nothing to see.

That remains the responsible conclusion.

But there is another lesson here.

The Trump White House has never been a normal political institution.

It is intensely personalized.

Trump's political world revolves around loyalty, access and proximity. The people who can get into the room matter enormously. The people who can get his attention matter even more.

Natalie Harp appears to understand that ecosystem exceptionally well.

Whether she is a loyal employee, an unusually devoted political disciple, a powerful gatekeeper or some combination of all three is a legitimate subject for political reporting.

Whether she is Trump's secret lover is, at this point, gossip.

And there is a difference.

The temptation to turn every powerful woman near a powerful man into a sexual story is almost as old as politics itself.

But there is a more modern question hiding underneath it:

Why does this particular aide have so much access?

That question can be investigated.

It can be documented.

It can be answered with emails, schedules, appointments, official records, financial disclosures and testimony.

An alleged affair cannot be established by body language.

And if there really is nothing between Trump and Harp beyond an unusually close professional relationship, the political implications may actually be more significant.

Because then the story is not about sex.

It is about access.

And in a presidency built around one man's personality, access is power.

As for Melania, perhaps she really did look at the itinerary, see seven hours of flight time and decide that Ireland could survive without her.

Perhaps she simply prefers her own space.

Perhaps she had other priorities.

Or perhaps, as the gossip columns desperately want us to believe, something much more complicated is happening behind the walls of Mar-a-Lago and the White House.

There is only one honest answer today: we do not know.

But we do know this.

Donald Trump went to Ireland.

Melania Trump stayed home.

Natalie Harp went with him.

And that photograph is going to generate considerably more questions than the seven-hour flight ever will.

White House hires another baby bigot

Leavitt replacement posed with a rifle while wearing a “Fuck Joe Biden” shirt

If there’s one thing the White House loves, it’s hiring young fascists—particularly to run communications and social media. It’s just a whole bunch of Zoomers spewing garbage.

So while 29-year-old former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has headed over to Fox News, another toddler is already on their way as assistant White House press secretary—and she also comes from the right-wing propaganda media world.

Meet Beni Rae Harmony—yes, that’s her real name—who is leaving her job at Real America’s Voice, a Steve Bannon joint that is somehow even more low-rent than One America News Network, to work for President Donald Trump.

Well, to be fair, if she was a talking head on a Bannon network, she pretty much already worked for Trump.

And did I mention Harmony also used to work for right-wing conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec, GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona, and former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida? The trifecta!

Back in 2021, the then-21-year-old Harmony defended Gosar for posting a video that portrayed him as killing Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and attacking then-President Joe Biden. And why not, given that Harmony posed with a rifle while wearing a “Fuck Joe Biden” shirt earlier that year?

It’s so cool and great that Republican hires can make full-on murder threats, but if, say. Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia makes an offhand quip about how Trump loves to travel with his emotional support aide Natalie Harp, the GOP absolutely loses its mind.

It’s the usual civility for me but not for thee nonsense that conservatives pull all the time.

But Harmony’s hiring isn’t the least bit unusual, keeping with the administration’s appetite to hire Zoomer racists.

Remember the then-29-year-old Paul Ingrassia, whose nomination to run the Office of Special Counsel was derailed when chats leaked with his cutesy little comment that he has a “Nazi streak”? No worries, though, he got a different job as acting general counsel at the General Services Administration, because you can’t keep a garbage Nazi wannabe down.

And then there’s Peyton Rollins, the 21-year-old who helps run social media for Homeland Security, where he can pump out racist AI slop. Rollins went to DHS after working at the Labor Department, where he was responsible for the giant fascist banner of Trump that now adorns the building.

And who could forget Marko Elez, the baby racist at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency who resigned after his virulently racist posts came to light? Then, of course, he was reinstated because for this administration, racism is a feature, not a bug.

But back to this latest fascist hack.

Harmony is going to be absolutely perfect for this job, given that her previous one was just fawning over Trump in the media, and all she really needs to do now is fawn over Trump from the podium.

Meanwhile, the administration continues to block actual news outlets. Politico was barred from Air Force One Monday, and CNN remains barred from the video press pool.

Soon, the entire White House briefing room will just be Tim Pool and Mike Lindell asking softball questions so Harmony can burble on about how amazing Trump is.

She may not actually be qualified to be press secretary, but when it comes to lying about Trump’s achievements, she’s no doubt perfect for the role.

Trump accuser E Jean Carroll finally has her damages safely in the bank

Millions will all "go to everything he hates"

Story by AFP

American journalist and writer E. Jean Carroll, the only person to successfully sue Donald Trump for sexual assault, told AFP she is finally free to spend the damages awarded to her from the US president.

But she won't be splurging on herself.

In late June, the US Supreme Court rejected what was thought to be a final appeal from Trump against Carroll's civil claim over a 1996 assault, meaning $5.6 million in damages which had been deposited by the president could be finally released to her.

But the fight did not end there for a woman whose seven-year legal battle against the Republican head of state has turned her into the standard bearer for dozens of others who have accused the US leader of sexual misconduct.

"So I have the money in my account, and Trump goes off his rocker and tries to bring a court injunction to get the money back!" Carroll told AFP of the pay-out.

"Why? Because he wants the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision."

Now, this week, "the Trump lawyers and the Carroll lawyers have now signed an agreement that the injunction is moot", the 82-year-old said in Paris, where she is promoting a French-language version of her book.

Although she can now spend the money, she says she has little need for it.

"I don't buy stuff. I know how to be happy," she said, before joking about the possibility of AI-created Armageddon: "I mean, you don't really need a bunch of money now, not with the world ending."

A second, much larger pay-out from Trump is also working its way through the US court system, with Carroll promising that the money "is going to go to everything he hates" -- women's rights, minority rights, the environment.

Damages of $83.3 million were awarded from a defamation case that Carroll launched against Trump after he denied sexually assaulting her in the changing room of a Manhattan department store and called her a liar.

Carroll recounted her ordeal and her excruciating legal fight in her book last year -- "Not My Type" -- which showcases her talent for observation and acid humour that made her a well-known columnist in New York in the 80s and 90s.

The title was a reference to Trump's infamous statement about her when she first aired her allegations.

The fight, she says, has been "hard, every single minute".

Meanwhile back at the ranch as Melania nurses her newborn infant...

WHOSE SIDE IS HE ON? Trump Tells Zelenskiy to Stop Hitting Russian Diesel

U.S. President Donald ‌Trump on Sunday called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to stop targeting Russian diesel infrastructure, saying the attacks were causing a shortage of the fuel that is "hurting the world".

A wave of long-distance Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries in recent months has reduced that country's fuel production, triggering gasoline shortages across the country.

Ukraine, which faces regular Russian attacks on its own energy infrastructure, says refineries are legitimate military targets.

The U.S. national average price for diesel, which is used by trucks, trains, ships and farm equipment, rose over $6 a gallon for the first time on Thursday, according to price tracker GasBuddy.

"Mr. Zelenskiy has to do one thing: He has to ‌stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia," Trump told journalists during a visit to the Irish Open, which is being held in the west of Ireland on a golf course owned by his family.

"We spoke to Mr. Zelenskiy about it. There are plenty of other targets. Don't hit diesel fuel. That's hurting the world," he said.

The global shortage "isn't done by the Middle East, this is done by what's happening with Russia and Ukraine," Trump added.

Russia downgraded its oil output forecast for this year to a 17-year low and revised its fuel exports outlook for 2026 and 2027 due to the war, according to a government draft forecast seen by Reuters.

"Screw you" to yet another ally.

‘Missing’ Epstein files containing major allegations against Trump discovered: report

‘Missing’ Epstein files containing major allegations against Trump discovered: report

Interviews with “Jane Doe 4” who accused Trump of sexual and physical abuse beginning when she was 13

Supposed FBI files that have previously been referred to as “missing” were recently discovered sitting on an online document-sharing platform, files that former MSNBC host Katie Phang said Saturday contain “allegations of sexual abuse committed by Donald Trump” against a 13- to 15-year-old victim, according to a report published Saturday.

Back in February, the Justice Department (DOJ) announced it was investigating claims that it had withheld a select trove of files related to Jeffrey Epstein. The DOJ had justified withholding some of the files by describing them as "duplicative" of material already turned over, a characterization that has since come under scrutiny.

A growing number of critics increasingly pointed to a trove of 37 pages of FBI handwritten notes taken during a 2019 interview with “Jane Doe 4,” a South Carolina woman who accused Trump and Epstein of sexual and physical abuse beginning when she was 13 years old.

The woman was interviewed four separate times by the FBI and was found credible by the agency, according to a DOJ source who spoke with the Miami Herald. While some details of her account have since been verified, her specific allegations against Trump remain unsubstantiated, and Trump is not being criminally investigated and has denied any wrongdoing as it relates to Epstein.

The “missing” 37 pages were aggressively pursued by investigators, including Phang, whose ongoing lawsuit against the DOJ specifically sought the release of said pages, alongside a trove of foreign-language documents related to Epstein.

This week, however, New York-based writer Amy Gabrielle appeared to have uncovered an online archive containing some of the sought-after FBI files. Writer and data researcher Rye Howard-Stone picked up where Gabrielle left off and, in a detailed write-up published on his Substack Saturday, revealed the alleged source of the mysterious upload: Kaelan Deese, a journalist with the conservative outlet Washington Examiner.

The Washington Examiner published a report written by Deese on March 7 titled: “What’s still missing from the Epstein files,” but according to Howard-Stone, Deese had “quietly released” 22 pages of the missing 37 on Scribd – the online document-sharing platform – just one day before. Those pages would go unnoticed by major media outlets for months.

“This meant that, for the last five months, anyone with internet access could view the notes, which had Jane Doe 4’s real name all over them, as well as significant biographical details and the names of childhood friends and family members who she said could corroborate elements of her story – all of which she gave the FBI in confidence, and all of which the DOJ had redacted,” Howard-Stone wrote.

“But Deese, who regularly publishes articles with a favorable conservative gloss, was part of a small, select group of people that DOJ brass secretly decided were – unlike the public and members of Congress – able to be trusted with these allegedly ‘duplicative,’ ultra-sensitive files. Entirely unredacted.”

Howard-Stone claimed that while Deese “took the files down shortly after” he contacted a Washington Examiner editor, Deese had also shared additional FBI handwritten notes with “one random person who had discovered the posts.”

“We found that person, who shared his text message exchanges with Deese,” Howard-Stone wrote.

Phang was contacted for comment on the revelation, and told Howard-Stone that the “timing of the discovery and release of these unredacted handwritten notes” was “interesting,” and that it also undermined the DOJ’s rationale for withholding them.

“There also remains an open question as to the authenticity of these published notes. That question could be readily answered if the FBI would just comply with the Epstein Files Transparency Act and release the notes they’ve been legally required to do,” Phang said.

“Regardless, what these notes DO show is that they are not 'duplicative' of the FBI 302s as Blanche has asserted and they clearly contain allegations of sexual abuse and physical abuse committed by Donald Trump with a victim who was 13-15 years old at the time. So the Trump DOJ has no incentive to release them.”

Trump is clueless. His new attempt to troll Iran proves it.

"Iran is betting it can wait out that doddering old fool in the White House."

President Donald Trump’s “edgy” antics have lost their luster. Once upon a time, they roiled markets and created drama in world capitals. Now many just roll their eyes.

Trump’s latest trolling effort, coming via Truth Social, is the claim that the Strait of Hormuz is “U.S. territory."

On his withering Truth Social platform, Trump posted an image showing the Strait of Hormuz, with a circle encompassing parts of Iran, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The caption: “New U.S. Territory.”

A Truth Social post from President Donald Trump, made on Aug. 18, 2026, showing an image with the Strait of Hormuz marked as a U.S. territory.
Truth Social (screenshot)

This has about as much credibility as his maps of annexed Canada and Greenland. In fact, given his losing war with Iran, the post is mostly a reminder of Trump’s impotence.

The war has left Iran effectively controlling the Strait, disrupting global shipping and roiling the world economy. And Trump’s much-ballyhooed ceasefire plan did nothing to solve the problem. Its vague language over control of the strait was so bad that Iran claimed the deal recognized its authority over the waterway. The agreement also promised $300 billion in reconstruction incentives if a final deal could be reached.

As one Emirati political strategist said at the time, “Iran saw the deal as a recognition it was in control. Now countries in the region are paying the price. … It’s a disaster, and we are back to square one.”

The deal was such a disaster that it looked like Trump was willing to sign anything if it let him declare victory and walk away from the mess he created.

Except he didn’t get to walk away. The ceasefire collapsed. Iran continued attacking ships. The strait remained largely closed. Oil prices surged. And now Trump is threatening to bomb Oman—an ally!—while pretending a waterway thousands of miles from the United States somehow belongs to us.

Iran is seemingly no longer afraid of U.S. bombs. Bombs can destroy things, but they can’t control territory. And if those bombs hurt the Iranian people? What do the mullahs care? They slaughter their own people indiscriminately.

Worse, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu handed the Iranian regime exactly what authoritarian governments crave: an external enemy around which to rally their people.

A regime that had faced massive public demonstrations now appears to be firmly back in control, digging in for a long fight and betting it can wait out that doddering old fool in the White House. Whatever hopes existed that the Iranian people might finally rid themselves of their murderous regime are now vastly diminished.

And Trump? All he has left are words and stupid AI memes. Or, as they say in Texas, he’s all hat, no cattle.

Trolling doesn’t open the Strait of Hormuz. It doesn’t lower oil prices. It doesn’t defeat Iran. And it sure as hell doesn’t magically turn Iranian, Omani, and Emirati territory into American soil.

But here’s the funny silver lining. Just weeks ago, the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship, ruling that children born in the United States to undocumented or temporarily present parents are U.S. citizens under the 14th Amendment.

So Trump might want to think through this whole “U.S. territory” thing. Because if he really wants to declare those parts of Iran, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates to be American territory, he might also be volunteering to give a whole lot of Middle Eastern babies U.S. citizenship.

Is that what MAGA really wants?

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Trump and The Harpie have places to go and things to do.
